Tool use

Using tools at a Forest School sessionLearning to use tools is integral to Forest School practice.

The reason we use them is to build confidence, achieve high levels of satisfaction, and have fun. This is done by learning safe practice, which is about raising self awareness, and awareness of those around us. It’s about discovering how to get spectacular results within our skill limits, which includes knowing the right tool for the right job. It’s about finding out which materials are sustainable in the woods, and which are best for which purpose. It’s about how to collect the materials from the wood and how to cut, cleave and make things from them.

A small selection of the many things we make at Forest School:

  • mallets
  • pegs
  • hooks
  • benches
  • stools
  • whistles
  • draw horses
  • breaks
  • peg and hole structures
